Individual words in italics work very well.
All headings are in serif font and only subheadings and quotes are in sans serif font. I find the gradation between the logo (sans serif), headlines (serif), and subheadings (sans serif) very harmonious.

I would advise against using different colors. Light-colored text can be difficult to read on many devices. It may only be sufficient if the font size is large, e.g., for quotations.
